The false economy of eBusiness

What is it? That dreaded phrase: “It doesn’t cost anything to…send an eMail campaign / build a database / create a microsite…” Fill in the blank with any eBusiness project, and you get the gist.

If, in some Utopian existence, you actually could run a business without paying staff, or hydro bills, or phone charges, or taxes, or any other standard revenue-sucking expenses…I’d still disagree. There is ALWAYS a lost opportunity cost, if nothing else. Any time you (or your team) spend time doing something, you are - by definition - not doing something else.

This is one of the key reasons that managing eBusiness in-house is not always feasible. If you’ve got a team whose core competency is eBusiness (or eCommerce, or eMarketing), then - by all means - those folks should be doing just that. But if you’ve got a team that is already busy with marketing, or research, or communications, or something else…then you’ve got to think about it carefully, before you re-direct their time to a shiny new task.
